University Hospital Interim Trauma Center

University Hospital Interim Trauma Center

DMS helped restore critical healthcare services to the New Orleans community in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina by procuring $90 million from FEMA to create an Interim trauma center.

DMS assisted the Louisiana State University’s Health Care Sciences Division (LSU-HCSD) with the development of a disaster recovery plan after Hurricane Katrina. Charity Hospital housed the only Level I Trauma center in the region, and was left underwater after a storm surge breached the city’s levee protection system. The hospital was completely inoperable and could no longer provide healthcare services to the community of New Orleans.

DMS determined that an interim solution was needed to restore critical healthcare services. The solution was to convert the moderately damaged University Hospital into an interim Level 1 Trauma Center.

DMS was instrumental in procuring $90 from FEMA to renovate the temporary healthcare facility. In less than one year, plans were designed and the facility was fully functional. This effectively restored critical healthcare services to the community until Charity’s replacement hospital opened.
